Gulbene: Exhibition area

A study by historian Anatoly Savick.

Agricultural exhibitions in the 1920s and 1930s took place in many places in Vidzeme in specially adapted places - exhibition grounds. This was also planned in the newly established town of Vecgulbene, whose construction project plan was authored by engineer Arnolds Maidelis . The exhibition area had a place in the immediate vicinity of the railway junction.

There were 3 squares in Gulbene - Exhibition Square, Market Square and Aerodrome .

From the very beginning of its establishment, Gulbene Market Square occupied an important place in the life of Gulbene residents. It was mainly a trading place, but it did not prevent it from organizing other activities, including exhibitions.

The aerodrome area was used for various local needs. In the mid-1930s, it became the base of the Latvian Army Intelligence Squadron with buildings and became a strategically important object for the defense of the entire country.

In the 1920s, the Gulbene Exhibition Ground was not used.

On October 1, 1933, a meeting of representatives of the surrounding farmers and agricultural organizations took place in the premises of the Gulbene Agricultural Society credit union. Its members decided to establish the association "Gulbene Exhibition" and supported the organization of the county's agricultural-industrial exhibition in 1934.
The main tasks of the board of the association:
1) Development and coordination of the exhibition space lease agreement with the Gulbene City Board;
2) Development of an exhibition area construction project.

Albert Neiders, a road engineer from Madona County, is involved in the development of the exhibition area construction project. On March 2, 1934, a construction project entitled "Gulbene Exhibition Construction Project" was approved.

It can be seen in the construction project that the territory to be built starts at the intersection of Ozolu and Robežu streets and continues for a few hundred meters along Ozolu Street (on the side of Emze Park) in the direction of Vidus Street.
The whole building area was divided into 3 zones:
1) an exhibition area with parking spaces for horses, bulls and cattle around the perimeter and in the middle of large free spaces;
2) the exhibition area of the exhibitors (participants) with buildings along its entire perimeter;
3) a buffet area in which it was planned to build a building for a buffet and a barn for belongings.

By the spring of 1934, the society had been able to fulfill 1 of the 2 tasks. There was still no permit for the county exhibition or discounts on building materials. Given the situation, the board of the association was forced to admit that it would not be possible to hold an exhibition at the county in the summer of 1934.

The Gulbene district agricultural-industrial exhibition took place on September 7 and 8, 1935 in the city market square. The choice of location for the exhibition was related to the municipality's planned investments in 1935 to improve the market square. In 1935, the city of Gulbene spent LVL 12,478.33 to improve the market.

On November 6, 1935, the board of the association "Gulbene Exhibition" signed a lease agreement for the exhibition space. The association leased a 7.25 ha plot of land - a forest-free area. The exhibition space was leased for 50 years - from November 1, 1935 to October 31, 1985 - with a rent of LVL 10 per year.

The association decided to level and exhibit the Exhibition area at its own expense. A land reclamation project for the whole area was commissioned and developed.

In the spring of 1936, the transfer of the buildings or building materials of the previous exhibition from the Market Square to the Exhibition Square began. The building materials were neatly assembled for storage until possible construction.

On April 28, 1938, on behalf of the Latvian Chamber of Agriculture, a calf (young cattle) ranch was organized in the Gulbene Exhibition Square.

Very soon after the occupation troops entered Latvia, the society was forced to “lend” the timber prepared for the Gulbene Exhibition Grounds. On October 10, 1940, the association "Gulbene Exhibition" was closed. Liquidation proceedings have been initiated.

The exhibition area remained unoccupied.
