Gāters Alfrēds (1921 - 1986), physician, linguist

Gāters Alfreds, a doctor, linguist and literary critic, was born on April 24, 1921 in Sprīvuļi, Kalncempju Parish, in a farmer's family.

Graduated from Madona Gymnasium (1941). 1942 started studying Germanic philology at the University of Latvia.

1943 enlisted in the Latvian Legion. From 1945 In Germany, he studied Germanic philology, classical languages and Indo-European comparative linguistics at the University of Hamburg. obtained a doctorate in comparative linguistics. He studied medicine at the University of Hamburg (1957-1963) and later worked as a specialist in internal medicine.

He has written on issues of comparative and Baltic linguistics, Latvian language and literature in German, Italian and Belgian special journals, and has managed the Department of Baltic Linguistics in the international bibliographic journal "Onoma" published in Belgium. He has written about Latvian language and literature in several new editions of the Brockhaus Encyclopedia, as well as the lexicons "Die Weltliteratur" ("World Literature", Vienna), "Kindlers Literaturlexikon" ("Kindler Literary Lexicon", Zurich), etc. Published the book "Die lettische Sprache und ihre Dialekte" ("Latvian Language and Its Dialects", 1977).

1993 published in 1950 - the manuscript "Lettische Syntax. Die Dainas" (Latvian Song Syntax) written by him. 2000 The collection "Reflections on Latvian Exile Writers" was published. A selection of his Latvian short stories in German remains in the manuscript.

Died July 2, 1986 in Hamburg, Germany.
