Kalniņš Otto (1856 - 1891), veterinarian, microbiologist
Microbiologist and veterinarian Oto Kalnins was born on February 25, 1856. He was born into the family of a former forester in "Ratenieki" in Leja parish.
Influenced by his brother Karl, who was already a veterinarian in Barnaul and then an assistant professor at Kazan, Otto entered the Tartu Veterinary Institute (1873 - 1877), was a war veterinarian. From 1890. At the bacteriological station in Tartu, he began researching malignancies. The first gave reliable and complete diagnostic evidence of the disease, and the first invented maleic, which helps fight rabies.
Working under inappropriate conditions, he became infected with the bacilli of this dangerous disease and died in April 1891 at the age of 35. Buried in Tartu, where his brother Karl placed a small memorial plaque. A memorial stone "Rateniekos" has also been unveiled to him.
