Straume Jūlijs (1874 - 1970), Master of Applied Arts

Born in 1874 in Druviena "Ķempjos".

After completing a full course of sciences at the Alexander School in Jelgava (Mitava), later at the Baron Stiglitz Central School of Art in St. Petersburg, he obtained the status of an applied art artist. In 1904 he continued his studies in Paris. In 1907 he moved to Georgia, where he gained his first recognition and success. Actively involved in the Caucasus Crafts Committee, founded in 1899.

Returned to Latvia in 1923, he worked as a teacher and lecturer in various schools in Riga. In 1925, the World Decorative Art Exhibition took place in Paris, where J. Straume's works won international recognition and medals.
Former Acting Consul of Latvia in Georgia (1921–1923). Most of J.Straume's creative heritage is located in the Georgian Museum of Folk and Applied Arts, which houses unique albums with colorful drawings of the Caucasus rugs.

Died in 1970.
