Duškins Pauls (1928 - 1996), painter

Graphic artist, sculptor Duškins Pauls (since 1993 Pauls Kalējs) was born on July 22, 1928 in Aduliena parish, Madona district, in the family of teacher Marta Duškina.

 

Studied at the LVU Faculty of Architecture (1947 - 1951), LVMA Graphics Department (1952), graduated from the Faculty of Graphics of I. Repin Leningrad Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture; diploma work - etching cycle "on the Baltic coast" (1959).

Participates in exhibitions since 1953.

Formed under the influence of Latvian and Russian art schools, independently mastered the traditions of Western Europe, especially English graphics; has become a recognized authority among the schedules of its time. He has worked in practically all types and genres of printing. He has made a significant contribution to the development of intaglio printing techniques, developing an original, picturesque impressionist manner of etching ("Night at the Daugava", "Dawn", "Where the Chimneys Smoke", "Sarma").

One of the Latvian graphic artists who has worked the most in cold needle technique in all classic genres. Among them stand out the portraits permeated with sensitive vibrations of the soul ("Head of an Old Man", "Portrait of the Painter J. Pauluks").

In lithography he has paid a lot of attention to the problems of color use (cycle "Constructions", "Computer", "Self - portrait".

Also known as the author of expressive watercolors saturated with colors and emotions ("Boy 's Head", "Nude", "Landscape of Old Riga".

Died on November 29, 1996.
