Studied violin at Liepāja Music High School, then continued to play the violin at the Latvian State Conservatory for 3 years. Then she realized that her real vocation was singing, and she re-entered the conservatory's vocal department. After graduating, she was invited to become a soloist at the Opera and Ballet Theater, where she performed more than 20 roles. He then became a soloist with the National Philharmonic. In the 1970s and 1980s, M. Kriegen was considered a benchmark for chamber singing in Latvia.
In 2019, Maija Kriegen received the Grand Music Award for Lifetime Achievement.
