Invitation to the discussion "I am 18: how to motivate new voters?"

Thursday, February 25, at 11.00 - 12.20 The European Parliament (EP) office in Latvia invites to an online discussion on how to motivate new voters.

Young people are quite active in various activities, both local and global, such as the fight against climate change and equality, but only a relatively small proportion go to the polls on election day. In Latvia, 38.9% of the 18-24 age group participated in the 2019 EP elections. Although there has been an increase in youth participation, most young people do not understand the importance of elections.

That is why the EP office in Latvia has launched the “I am 18” initiative. As part of this, we will pay special attention to young people who are voting to vote this year, as well as professionals working with young people - municipal youth workers, youth organizations and teachers at the EP Ambassadors' schools - who help raise awareness of the importance of elections. The aim is to encourage young people to participate in both the municipal elections this year, the Saeima elections in 2022 and the EP elections in 2024.

How to motivate young people? What is good practice? Representatives of youth organizations, local governments and schools of EP Ambassadors will share their experience in the online discussion led by Elīna Vrobļevska, a lecturer at Riga Stradiņš University.

Registration until February 24 at 16.00 https://ec.europa.eu/eusurvey/runner/25052021

An access link on the Zoom platform will be sent to the e-mail address provided in the registration. The discussion will also be shown on the EP's Facebook account @European Parliament.
